INVESTORS need to focus on a few features when they are looking at equityoriented mutual funds because this will enable them to get a proper picture of how they are being managed. There has to be a proper way in which the entire effort is undertaken so that no important point is missed out. Here is a look at some factors that need your attention.

Diversification:

One of the main points of a mutual fund is that it allows for diversification of the portfolio. There are multiple holdings in the portfolio of the investor whereby this ensures that there is a lower amount of risk that is present with the mutual fund investment. However, there are times when the fund actually ensures that there is over diversification. This is a situation where there are so many holdings that this does not give any additional benefit to the investor, as the performance remains tepid even when there is a good rise in several holdings in the portfolio. This can be avoided if the fund is following a proper strategy with respect to the diversification in the portfolio and there is some element of concentration. This is required to some extent so the presence of this can be considered as a factor that would be significant.

Decision making process:

There has to be an element of research that goes behind the decision making process for the fund.

The capability on this front is crucial because over a longer time frame,

the ability of the fund to undertake the necessary rigorous exercise to weed out investments that do not make the grade. The research strength will also ensure that the problems are known beforehand and the fund manager is able to take the necessary steps with respect to the portfolio. There will also be a specific process that goes behind the decision making while investing, which will set the benchmark for the fund to operate. So the presence of adequate research facilities is a good thing.

Consistency:

Fund management calls for a consistent strategy that has to be followed over a long period of time. It should not be that when the times are good, a certain strategy is followed not because it is valid but due to the fact that this is giving some result and then this is immediately dumped as things go wrong. If there is an element of consistency for the purpose of managing the equity exposure and the way in which the funds are actually managed then the fund will be able to show results at the end of the day.

This will be in terms of the consistency in returns and this is something that every investor should look out for.

Facing tough times:

The real challenge for any fund is being able to face the tough times with an element of confidence and this would be possible only when there is adequate homework undertaken and when there is a clear thought and strategy behind the various steps. It is vital that the tough times have to be faced with the same action as good times and this is what will set a fund apart from its peers. It will help build confidence of the investor and this is something that needs attention so that the position on this front is known properly.

The filing of online provident fund accounts transfer claims on changing jobs for subscribers of the retirement fund body EPFO has become a reality now. The facility has been made available as the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has launched its online transfer claim portal (OTCP) on October 2, 2013, as per an office circular said.

According to the circular to its field staff, EPFO's Central Provident Fund Commissioner K K Jalan has said, "..handling of transfer cases generates maximum bad publicity and it is expected that this issue shall be resolved after OTCP is made fully functional".

Jalan has also directed that after October 31, there shall be no physical movement of paper (either claims or Annexure "K") in transferring member accounts from one office to another.

Annexure K contains details of service period with an employer and the amount of funds deposited in the pension fund account of the subscribers who seek transfer of PF accounts.

The facility of online transfer of provident fund accounts will reduce the work load of the body substantially as over 13 lakh applicants files such claims every year. EPFO has set up a central clearance house for this purpose and the body envisages to reduce the time for transfer of PF accounts to three days through the online service.

The EPFO started registering digital signatures of companies from July 25, a prerequisite for the facility. At present over 30,000 employers or establishments have already registered their digital signatures with EPFO. According to the information available, 80 percent of the firms employing more than 500 workers have already registered their digital signatures with EPFO.

EPFO officials say that job changes are more frequent in big firms employing more than 500 workers, especially in sectors such as information technology. The body managed PF accounts of about 6.9 lakh establishments in 2011-12.

The officials say it's easier for companies in sectors such as IT to register digital signatures as they already maintain them to comply with Ministry of Corporate Affairs requirements. During 2012-13, the EPFO settled 107.62 lakh claims, 88 percent of which were processed within 30 days, as prescribed by the body's citizen charter. The EPFO expects 1.2 crore claims in 2013-14, including around 13 lakh PF transfer claims, largely from tech-savvy companies from sectors like IT.

How to Tracking your mutual fund?

You may have just written a cheque and handed it over to your distributor towards an investment in a mutual fund (MF) scheme. This may be your first investment in an MF scheme or you may be a seasoned investor.

In either case, you would have hopes of garnering healthy returns some time in the future, given your investment horizon.

But what route does your investment take in its way of making money for you? Here, we explore how your investment is processed after you have handed over the cheque.

After you have short-listed the desired scheme(s) for investment, you have the option of investing directly with the fund house or enlisting the services of a distributor. Once you make the investment, your details are forwarded to the Registrars and Transfer Agent (
RTA).

These entities maintain investor records by converting the information from physical to electronic form. It is the RTA which determines the applicable net asset value (NAV) to your investment request and also determines the number of units that will be allotted to you.

Once the asset management company (AMC) receives the invested amount and unit allotment details from the RTA, it makes the investment according to its defined strategy.

To make this happen, a team of fund managers, research analysts, dealers and risk managers collaborate, putting their respective expertise into practice.

The result of their efforts can be seen in the scheme's NAV which is the total value of all securities in a scheme's portfolio divided by the number of units.

Next comes the custodian, who is responsible for keeping safe physical securities and cash while the de-materialised securities are kept with a depositary participant.

The custodian keeps records of various corporate actions declared by companies whose securities a mutual fund has invested in. It also plays a role in ensuring delivery of securities in which an MF has made an investment and paying out the money for the same.

Now with so many entities working in tandem to operate a scheme, it is fair to assume that all of them would be charging a fee for their services. This fee is termed as expense ratio and is expressed as a percentage of a scheme's average net assets. A lower expense ratio is favourable to you since it indicates that more of the investors' money is being invested in securities.

Industry regulator Sebi has capped the maximum amount that can be charged to a scheme. For instance, in equity funds, on the first Rs 100 crore of the daily net assets, the expense ratio is capped at 2.50% per annum, on the next Rs 300 crore at 2.25% and thereafter it keeps decreasing up to a certain level. It is important to note that the NAV is arrived at after deducting these expenses.

If you intend to sell your units, you will need to place a sell order post which the applicable NAV will be determined by the RTA and, given your period of investment, an exit load may be charged. This load, which is charged as a percentage of the NAV, diminishes the redemption amount. So, if you are redeeming your investment in a scheme at the NAV of Rs 100 per unit and the mutual fund levies an exit load of 1.5%, the applicable value after paying the load will be Rs 98.50 per unit.

After the successful execution of a sell order, the proceeds will either be credited directly to your account or a cheque will be handed over to you. According to regulations, an AMC is required to despatch the redemption or repurchase proceeds within 10 working days.

Finally, when you get the money in your account, the entire cycle from investment to redemption is completed.
