Ali`i Nui Mō`ī Edmund K. Silva, Jr., 1-9-16… "King's Letter to Prosecutor Roth... 'Dismiss the Charges'"

Ali`i Mana`o Nui Lanny Sinkin: Kaho'okahi Kanuha was one of the leaders of the civil disobedience preventing construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope. He was charged with obstruction of a public road. Yesterday the Judge in his case found him not guilty. The Judge essentially found that he had a sincere belief that he was obligated to protect the Mauna from desecration. Based on the sincerity of his belief, he lacked the criminal intent necessary to be charged with a crime.

Kanuha insisted on conducting his defense in the Hawaiian language. Here is some of the coverage of this remarkable trial.

In response to the verdict in the Kanuha case and the Hawai'i Supreme Court ruling that the permit for the telescope was invalid, the King has called upon the prosecutor to dismiss any remaining charges against those who acted similarly to protect the Mauna.
