Scotland, Germany, Latvia, Greece (and I'm sure a lot more) are opting out of "growing EU-authorised GM crops". I've posted three articles from Sustainable Pulse below, with a highlight.
This is a great sign, in my mind. We've done our work, energetically, and now it's coming to fruition... one step, and one country, at a time.
Scotland Announces Total Ban on GM Crops (8-9-15)
"Growing genetically modified (GM) crops will not be permitted in Scotland, Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead has announced as he moved to protect Scotland's clean, green status.
"The Cabinet Secretary said:... "There is no evidence of significant demand for GM products by Scottish consumers and I am concerned that allowing GM crops to be grown in Scotland would damage our clean and green brand, thereby gambling with the future of our £14 billion food and drink sector."
Scottish National Party Welcomes German Moves to Ban GM Crops (8-25-15)
"German Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt has informed German states of his intention to use a new EU law, passed in March, to ban the use of GM crops. This follows the Scottish Government's announcement earlier this month that they will take similar action to protect Scotland's clean, green status.
"Commenting, SNP MSP Rob Gibson said: "Like Scotland, the German Government recognises the importance of protecting its food and drink sector and keeping its environment clean and green.""
Latvia and Greece Start Green Wave of GM Crop Bans across Europe (8-27-15)
"Latvia and Greece are the first countries in the EU to have had their geographical opt-out's from growing GM crops accepted by Monsanto. Many other EU countries, including Germany and France, are expected to request geographical opt-outs from growing Monsanto's MON810 GM Maize over the next month.
"Under the EU law signed in March individual countries can seek geographical exclusion from any approval request for GM cultivation across the EU. While the European Commission is responsible for approvals, requests to be excluded also have to be submitted to the company making the application i.e. Monsanto for MON810.
"Sustainable Pulse will update you on which countries in the EU officially ban the cultivation of GM crops in 2015! The confirmation of a non-gmo green wave is sweeping across the continent!"
