This is pretty remarkable video from 1940. The first 6-7 minutes is filmed on the Kona side, with many sights we see as we drive Ali'i Drive next to the ocean. About the only time you may see cattle swimming from boat to boat. The Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys) are amazing.
At least this may give some a flavor for what it's like to live in Kona today (but now with a lot more buildings and cars and people.

Recently discovered vintage, never before seen, 16mm films from a garage sale taken during a world tour in 1940. This digital conversion of a short portion of those films depict of The Big Island's Kona side. From vintage coffee and cotton plantations, to The Kona Inn and a paniolo cattle drive from the past. Please note: a few scenes are edited with a few scenes from a second trip circa 1951-'52. All Rights Reserved.
