As I was following some Guidance this evening, I did a short search for "Kingdom of Hawaii" on YouTube. And found these three videos, which I felt were ripe for the viewing, after the recent San Francisco Chronicle post.
I believe the first one is entitled "Attempted Overthrow", because in all factual and legal sense, there was no overthrow. The second demonstrates the willingness of the Hawaiian community to go to great lengths to demonstrate their opposition to any kind of "annexation", an states that 38,000 of the approximately 40,000 Hawaiians of the Kingdom (95%) opposed annexation. The third illustrates how the U.S. Congress "got around" this by simply passing a joint resolution, which annexed the "Republic of Hawaii" into the U.S.
From that video, at about 0:36, Harper's Weekly of 2-26-1898 wrote, "If Congress were strictly to obey the Constitution, annexation could not take place."
