Learn Something New - Expert Tips for Etching Copper Jewelry
August 8, 2011
I'll be the first to admit that I know absolutely nothing about working with metal when it comes to jewelry making, but making metal jewelry has always intrigued me. I can remember when I was in college watching with envy as my friends who were art majors took metal working and came out of their classes with gorgeous copper pendants and bracelets. I still have a copper and enamel pendant that was made and given to me by a close friend, and it's one of my favorite funky jewelry pieces!Still, I sometimes think about clearing a space in my glass workshop and experimenting with metals for jewelry making, and after watching Metalsmith Essentials: Jewelry Etching on Copper with Lexi Erickson, I'm definitely ready to give etching on copper a try! Beading Projects On the Go - Tips for Traveling With Your Beads
August 10, 2011

My well-loved soft tacklebox is perfect for carrying lots of beads to shows and classes.

It's summer, and that means that lots of people are hitting the road for a vacation. I'll be packing up my beads and heading to a couple of beading classes this summer, too, so I thought I'd share some tips for storing and traveling with your beads! The first summer that I did any serious traveling with my beads was the year I did farmer's markets every weekend. Because I had a lot of down time, I found myself bringing along beading projects to keep myself busy. Each week, I'd grab another bag with a set of beads for a project in it and toss it into my tote bag. Pretty soon, I discovered that I was hauling around a rolling carry-on suitcase, stuffed full of beads and beading projects! Needless to say, this method was less than ideal, and since then, I've discovered a few ways to make it easy to travel with my beads. (Check out the Beading Daily blog for two more suggestions for traveling with your beads around the house and around the neighborhood!) Read More . . .

5 Tips for Buying Beads at a Bead Show - Get Ready for Bead Fest Philadelphia!
August 12, 2011

I scooped up these hanks of cut seed beads at a gem show in upstate New York

I can still remember the very first time I went to Bead Fest Philadelphia. I had just opened a bead shop with two business partners. I was a month away from getting married. And I had never, ever been to a bead show before. To say that I was overwhelmed when I walked onto the show floor was an understatement. There were beads EVERYWHERE! It was like a dream come true and a nightmare all at once - I didn't know where to look first, and I didn't want to miss a thing. It was a wonderful and exhausting weekend where I got to try a new kind of lampworking torch (I was heavy into glass at the time), picked up a beautiful carved frog Tagua nut bead, took two amazing classes and basked in the energy of all the wonderful bead people surrounding me. Hanging Out With Kate McKinnon, Part I

08/10/2011

Did I tell you about the time I met Kate McKinnon? No? Well then . . .

I was walking the aisles of one of the smaller bead shows in Tucson last February when I saw a booth with books, art, and jewelry that looked familiar. Just about the time I realized what it was--work by one of my favorite metal clay and jewelry artists and authors, Kate McKinnon--I looked up and saw . . . Kate McKinnon!

Hanging Out With Kate McKinnon, Part II

08/10/2011

It's no secret that Kate McKinnon's books Sculptural Metal Clay Jewelry and Jewelry Architect are two of my favorite craft and jewelry-making books of all time. We've written about her work on Jewelry Making Daily before, sharing metal clay tips and other little pieces of advice from her books, and Karla even interviewed Kate to glean even more of her metal clay brilliance for you. But other than a brief meeting with Kate in Tucson last February, I haven't gotten to just chat with her and ask her the other questions, the fun questions, so I was so happy when she agreed to do an interview with me and you.
