PCMag Picks the Top 100 iPad Apps There are thousands of apps in the App Store, but there isn't room for all of them on your iPad. If you are like most iPad owners, you want a shortcut to the best of the bunch. PCMag has tested hundreds of apps and has collected our favorite 100 here. And if you feel like we missed something, let us know in the comments. We will update this story throughout the year. ADVERTISEMENT | Graphic: Facebook Photo History, From Tagging to Facial Recognition There is a fine line between unexpected utility and creepiness. I never liked Facebook's tagging feature. It took just one indiscreet colleague (ahem, Molly) to post a late night CES party photo to understand how tenuous my privacy really was. Add facial recognition and things just get weirder. PCMag's Chloe Albanesius tracks the Facebook's photo history and even includes a nifty infographic to explain how we got here. Review: Sony Alpha NEX-C3 This review is going to cost me $700. I shot with the original NEX-3 and loved it. This model is a step up in every way except price. It is lighter, more compact, and produces stunning images, even at high ISO settings. It easily earns our Editors' Choice for compact interchangeable lens cameras and as soon as I can convince the girlfriend we can afford it, I am going to buy one. Check out our full review. Black Hat: Square Credit-Card Reader Hacked! PCMag's Security Guru, Neil Rubenking, is rubbing shoulders with hackers of all sorts at Black Hat this week and so far has emerged with nothing but scoops. His latest diddy was of a team of hackers breaking into the Square device and using it for nefarious purposes. Before you get too concerned, understand the risk applies mostly to stored value card vendors that don't want people redeeming them for cash. Regardless, a fix is on the way from Square. Of course, that is sort of what Black Hat is for. Black Hat Hacker Details Lethal Wireless Attack on Insulin Pumps Then again, sometimes hacks really do hurt people. Mr. Seb over at ExtremeTech has the detail on how wireless attached, always- on insulin pumps could be vulnerable to potential lethal attacks. And this is no idle threat for the researcher who discovered it, Jerome Radcliffe. Radcliffe has an insulin pump himself. "I can get full remote control," Radcliffe said. "If I were an evil hacker, I could issue commands to give insulin, without anyone else's authority. This is scary." Read on for more details. AMD's Bulldozer vs. New Versions of Intel's Sandy Bridge AMD and Intel have been locked in a battle for the heart of the PC and server markets for years, with Intel usually getting the better end of the stick. AMD latest gambit is called Bulldozer, a brand new chip architecture that should shipping by the end of September. Forward Thinking's Michael Miller has the deep dive into AMD's latest offering and how it stacks up to Intel's Sandy Bridge. Good stuff. Tiny village in Nebraska hides world's largest rare earth mineral deposits In the past I have used the space to bemoan the lack of domestic rare earth minerals that makes our electronics firms highly dependent on more resource-rich nations, like China. Well good news, my fellow (mostly) Americans, Quantum Rare Earths Developments Corp. found some of these high-tech goodies under a small town called Elk Creek. Find out what they dug-up at Geek.com.
